Jurassic World – Year 10 fieldtrip to Swanage – Day 3

Day 3 –  8/7/15

Not as good weather today but still good for fieldwork – sunny intervals and cloudy.  The two coaches swapped over routines today, Mr Douglas and Mr Smith’s groups completing their controlled assessment in the Lulworth Cove area and Mr Hardman’s group walking back to the centre from Shell  Bay, completing the coastal section of the specification. The weather was perfect for the short climb up to Durdle Door, completing footpath erosion studies en route. This coastline is spectacular, gaining world heritage status in 2001 and named in the Top 50 Beaches of the UK in the Sunday Times last Sunday! Beach Quality surveys and Environment Quality assessments were conducted on the beaches. After lunch, the ice cream van at the top of the hill had opened and the group enjoyed much needed ice creams. In the village of West Lulworth, the group completed land use surveys, pedestrian and traffic counts, to investigate the impacts of tourism. The group had a presentation from a ranger from the Lulworth Estate who gave invaluable secondary data for the write up. The group are working late (in glorious sunshine), to ensure that the data collection section can be completed over the summer break.
