Year 8 Careers & Options Fair February 2017

During January the Year 8 pupils have been finding out about the subjects they can choose for their GCSE options which they will start in September 2017. As well as Parents Evenings and Guidance Interviews there was a Careers Fair & Options Evening. This involved over thirty businesses and colleges having stands in the school hall with personnel giving advice to pupils and parents concerning careers available and what qualifications are needed.

Great comments from the exhibiters included:-

“Brilliant contact with interested students.”

“Great evening meeting aspiring young people at the Crompton House Careers Fair.”

“Exhausted now! Didn’t stop talking for two hours ‪at Crompton House careers event.”

Parents and pupils were equally impressed:-

“I was pleased one of the apprenticeship representatives gave careers advice, listened to my daughter and gave suggestions of careers she might be interested in.”

“We discovered apprenticeship opportunities and college courses that gave us ideas of different occupations which we not thought of.”

“Both myself and my son found the web application stall informative and fun and confirmed a few ideas in terms of career and subsequently subject options. We also enjoyed hearing from the civil engineers and quantity surveyors.”

“The apprenticeship information was very interesting giving an alternative option to university.”

In the Gym all the option subjects had their stands with staff and older pupils offering advice about the courses on offer.
When asked about the evening parents said:-

“All the staff were a credit to the school. It was fantastic to hear them talk so enthusiastically about their subjects. They all had a great relationships with the children and were confident in sharing their own experiences, which was very powerful as the teachers are such great role models to the students.”

“It was useful to discuss the requirements for each subject and rationale behind the decision whether or not to choose a particular subject. It was also pleasing that the teachers all spoke to the students in such a helpful way.”

“It was good to have time to talk with the teachers of different departments about their subjects & what the GCSE courses entail.”

“It was useful to find out what is involved in the exams.”

“I was glad to find out about the subjects the students haven’t yet had the opportunity to experience and meet subject teachers who we have not seen at parents evening, e.g. Sociology, Business Studies.”

“My daughter was able to chat with teachers more around the subjects she may choose and take information with her to look at afterwards.”

As can be seen from the comments made by the exhibitors and parents it was a very useful evening, helping the pupils and parents make informed choices for their GCSE courses which start in just seven months time.

Many thanks to the members of the PTFA who provided refreshments for pupils, parents, exhibitors and staff. They were much appreciated.
